◇ image via WikipediaBilly Preston
Billy Preston is a Blues and Funk act. Their catalogue also touches Gospel, House and Rhythm and blues. Their sound grew out of Climie Fisher, Hey Jude, Clarence Clemons, Ian Stewart and Sly and the Family Stone. Those roots explain a lot about how Billy Preston arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Bill Withers, Donny Hathaway, Ohio Players, Average White Band and The Chi-Lites, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Norah Jones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Neil Diamond, Gloria Jones and Every Breath You Take, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 75 connections around Billy Preston, reaching back through Climie Fisher and forward to Norah Jones.
