Rap
Rap

R.E.M. is a Rap act. Their sound grew out of Roger McGuinn, Horses, The Troggs, Patti Smith and The Velvet Underground. Those roots explain a lot about how R.E.M. arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as U2, Manic Street Preachers, Toad The Wet Sprocket, 10,000 Maniacs and Pixies, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Goo Goo Dolls, Blake Babies, Matthew Herbert, Darius Rucker and The Get Up Kids, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 137 connections around R.E.M., reaching back through Roger McGuinn and forward to Goo Goo Dolls. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
