Cake

Alternative rock
Alternative rockCountryIndie rock

Cake is a Alternative rock and Country act. Their catalogue also touches Indie rock, Rap and Rock. Their sound grew out of The Chakachas, David Gates, Bob Wills, Buddy Holly and Lou Reed. Those roots explain a lot about how Cake arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Marcy Playground, Soul Coughing, Beck, Everclear and Eels, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Nada Surf, Straight Outta Lynwood, Hackensaw Boys, Modest Mouse and De La Soul, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 43 connections around Cake, reaching back through The Chakachas and forward to Nada Surf. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
