Chic is a Disco and Rhythm and blues act. Their sound grew out of New York City, Sister Sledge, Walter Murphy, Ultra Naté and The Three Degrees. Those roots explain a lot about how Chic arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Kool & The Gang, Change, Brothers Johnson, A Taste of Honey and Patrice Rushen, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into I Was Gonna Cancel, Tom Aspaul, Hailee Steinfeld, Lisa Stansfield and John Deacon, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 85 connections around Chic, reaching back through New York City and forward to I Was Gonna Cancel.
