Possessed is a Black metal act. Their sound grew out of Combat Records, Exodus, Venom, Motörhead and Iron Maiden. Those roots explain a lot about how Possessed arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Venom, Sarcófago, Sodom, Hellhammer and Morbid Angel, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Immortal, Napalm Death, Vader, Entombed and George Fisher, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 66 connections around Possessed, reaching back through Combat Records and forward to Immortal. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
Background
Possessed is an American death metal band, originally formed in 1982 in the San Francisco Bay Area. Noted for their fast style of playing and Jeff Becerra's growled vocals, they are often called the first band in the death metal genre, and paved the way for the 1980s Bay Area thrash metal scene, along with Metallica, Exodus, Testament and Death Angel. The band is also notable for featuring then-teenage guitarist Larry LaLonde, who went on to join Primus.
