Samael is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Possessed, Devilish Impressions, In Flames, Flames and Kiss. Those roots explain a lot about how Samael arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Rotting Christ, Moonspell, Dimmu Borgir, Borknagar and Dark Funeral, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Fenriz Presents... The Best of Old-School Black Metal, Sadist, Sentenced, Devin Townsend and Watain, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 42 connections around Samael, reaching back through Possessed and forward to Fenriz Presents... The Best of Old-School Black Metal. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
