Sodom is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Venom, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motörhead and Kiss. Those roots explain a lot about how Sodom arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Destruction, Kreator, Tankard, Venom and Exodus, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Kreator, Destruction, Tankard, Sepultura and Running Wild, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 71 connections around Sodom, reaching back through Venom and forward to Kreator. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
Background
Sodom is a German thrash metal band from Gelsenkirchen, formed in 1982. They have gone through various line-up changes, with bassist/vocalist Tom Angelripper the only constant member. The band is currently composed of Angelripper, guitarists Frank "Blackfire" Gosdzik and Yorck Segatz, and drummer Toni Merkel. Sodom has been referred to as one of the "Big Four" of Teutonic thrash metal, along with Kreator, Destruction and Tankard. Sodom heavily influenced the German black metal scene, and is regarded as a pioneer of death metal. Referred to as the most Venom-blackened of German "Three Kings", Sodom further merged thrash and death metal into a "wicked and decadent sound."
