Van Halen is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Dancing in the Street, Triumph, Wishbone Ash, Armand van Helden and Santana. Those roots explain a lot about how Van Halen arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Sammy Hagar, Def Leppard, Dokken, Whitesnake and Poison, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Night Ranger, Vinnie Moore, Jeff Waters, Michael Sweet and Richard Christy, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 128 connections around Van Halen, reaching back through Dancing in the Street and forward to Night Ranger. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
