◇ image via WikipediaMercyful Fate
Mercyful Fate is a Heavy metal act. Their sound grew out of Memento Mori, Exciter, Death Angel, Bathory and Hellhammer. Those roots explain a lot about how Mercyful Fate arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Venom, Angel Witch, Sanctuary, Bathory and Overkill, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Megadeth, Tim "Ripper" Owens, Girlschool, Watain and In the Nightside Eclipse, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 67 connections around Mercyful Fate, reaching back through Memento Mori and forward to Megadeth.
