Algiers

Algiers is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Rage Against the Machine, Interpol, Portishead, Massive Attack and Young Fathers. Those roots explain a lot about how Algiers arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Bambara, Iceage, Shame, Liars and METZ, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Bloc Party, Brendan Canty, Fugazi, Depeche Mode and Armand Hammer, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 34 connections around Algiers, reaching back through Rage Against the Machine and forward to Bloc Party. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Algiers pulls from a divergent number of musical influences; the most notable of these influences are post-punk, hip-hop, Southern Gothic literature, and the concept of the Other. Their sound has been described as dystopian soul due to its somber mood, afrofolk inspired vocal approach, and heavy emphasis on atonal textures.
