◇ image via WikipediaPortishead
Portishead is a Rap and Trip hop act. Their sound grew out of Daddy G, Althea & Donna, Karmacoma, Kormac and The Books. Those roots explain a lot about how Portishead arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Massive Attack, Tricky, DJ Vadim, Sneaker Pimps and Moloko, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Joy Williams, Evanescence, Supercell, Felt Mountain and The Album Leaf, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 89 connections around Portishead, reaching back through Daddy G and forward to Joy Williams.
