◇ image via WikipediaCommon
Common is a Contemporary R&B and Hip hop act. Their catalogue also touches Trip hop. Their sound grew out of Sylvia Striplin, Q-Tip, Canibus, Black Thought and Questlove. Those roots explain a lot about how Common arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Slum Village, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Little Brother and Gang Starr, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Kanye West, Femi Kuti, Andy Grammer, Everything Is Love and Charlie Wilson, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 105 connections around Common, reaching back through Sylvia Striplin and forward to Kanye West. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
