Gorillaz is a Alternative rock and Electronic act. Their catalogue also touches Electropop, Hip hop and Indie rock. Their sound grew out of Barrington Levy, Mark E. Smith, 6lack, Little Dragon and Sampha. Those roots explain a lot about how Gorillaz arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Radiohead, The Strokes, Childish Gambino, Foster the People and Massive Attack, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into The Fate of Ophelia, Head Automatica, Chiddy Bang, Vince Staples and The Living Tombstone, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 107 connections around Gorillaz, reaching back through Barrington Levy and forward to The Fate of Ophelia. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
