Mazzy Star is a Dream pop act. Their sound grew out of Sonic Youth, Minutemen, The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and Air. Those roots explain a lot about how Mazzy Star arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions, The Sundays, Mojave 3, Cocteau Twins and Slowdive, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Xx (The xx album), Dentist, Love Spells, The Cat's Miaow and Ruby Throat, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 80 connections around Mazzy Star, reaching back through Sonic Youth and forward to Xx (The xx album). Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
