◇ image via WikipediaWatain
Watain is a Black metal act. Their sound grew out of Rotting Christ, Mercyful Fate, Samael, Venom and Darkthrone. Those roots explain a lot about how Watain arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Marduk, Dark Funeral, Satyricon, Gorgoroth and Dissection, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Nachtmystium and The Devil's Blood, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 46 connections around Watain, reaching back through Rotting Christ and forward to Nachtmystium.
