The Alarm is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of The Police, Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros, U2, Bob Dylan and The Who. Those roots explain a lot about how The Alarm arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Big Country, The Fixx, Squeeze, Adam Ant and The Smithereens, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Squeeze, Big Country, The Silencers, Karl Wallinger and Stiff Little Fingers, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 35 connections around The Alarm, reaching back through The Police and forward to Squeeze. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
