◇ image via WikipediaThe Pretenders
The Pretenders is a Rap and Rock act. Their sound grew out of The Kinks, John Deacon, The B-52's, Shirley Manson and The Platters. Those roots explain a lot about how The Pretenders arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as The Cars, Squeeze, Eurythmics, Elvis Costello & The Attractions and Elvis Costello, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into The Alarm, Alanis Morissette, Pixies, Carrie Underwood and Grace Jones, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 60 connections around The Pretenders, reaching back through The Kinks and forward to The Alarm.
