The Roots

Funk
FunkHip hopHouse

The Roots is a Funk and Hip hop act. Their catalogue also touches House, Jazz and Rap. Their sound grew out of Kaki King, Biz Markie, Marcia Griffiths, Rachael Yamagata and Chrisette Michele. Those roots explain a lot about how The Roots arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Mos Def, Talib Kweli, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and Blu & Exile, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Non Phixion, Gym Class Heroes, Deluxe, Jill Scott and Beanie Sigel, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 138 connections around The Roots, reaching back through Kaki King and forward to Non Phixion. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
