Citizen Cope is a Blues act. Their sound grew out of Dr. John, Alice Smith, Pharoahe Monch, Massive Attack and Mary Mary. Those roots explain a lot about how Citizen Cope arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Dispatch, Donavon Frankenreiter, Ray LaMontagne, G. Love & Special Sauce and Guster, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Bliss n Eso, Carlos Santana, Dido, Pharoahe Monch and Richie Havens, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 53 connections around Citizen Cope, reaching back through Dr. John and forward to Bliss n Eso.
