George Michael is a Alternative rock and Contemporary R&B act. Their catalogue also touches Dance-pop, Funk and House. Their sound grew out of Patrice Rushen, Nik Kershaw, Older, A Question of Lust and Jocelyn Brown. Those roots explain a lot about how George Michael arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Wham!, Lisa Stansfield, Seal, Pet Shop Boys and Phil Collins, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Charlie Puth, Aretha Franklin, Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse, The Grace and What the Hell Just Happened?, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 98 connections around George Michael, reaching back through Patrice Rushen and forward to Charlie Puth.
