LL Cool J is a Contemporary R&B act. Their sound grew out of PJ Morton, Russell Simmons, Simply Deep, Craig Mack and Jody Watley. Those roots explain a lot about how LL Cool J arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as EPMD, Boogie Down Productions, Naughty By Nature, Heavy D & The Boyz and Eric B. & Rakim, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Dom Kennedy, MTV Unplugged, Paradise, Run the Jewels and Ooooooohhh... On the TLC Tip, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 114 connections around LL Cool J, reaching back through PJ Morton and forward to Dom Kennedy.
