Pretenders

Punk rock
Punk rock

Pretenders is a Punk rock act. Their sound grew out of Steve Strange, Stephen Hague, Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Damned. Those roots explain a lot about how Pretenders arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Eurythmics, Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello, The Fixx and Rod Stewart, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Coldplay, Lily Allen, Amor Prohibido, Noodles and Tom Jones, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 35 connections around Pretenders, reaching back through Steve Strange and forward to Coldplay. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Background

The Pretenders are an English rock band formed in March 1978. The original band consisted of founder and main songwriter Chrissie Hynde, James Honeyman-Scott, Pete Farndon, and Martin Chambers. Following the deaths of Honeyman-Scott in 1982 and Farndon in 1983, the band experienced numerous personnel changes; American-born Hynde has been the band's only continuous member.
