◇ image via WikipediaThe 5th Dimension
The 5th Dimension is a House and Rhythm and blues act. Their sound grew out of The Mamas & the Papas, Willie Hutch, Valerie Simpson, Harry Belafonte and Arista Records. Those roots explain a lot about how The 5th Dimension arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as The Association, Tavares, The Spinners, The Friends of Distinction and The Young Rascals, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Milk & Sugar, Swing Out Sister, Yes, Faith Evans and Whitney Houston, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 57 connections around The 5th Dimension, reaching back through The Mamas & the Papas and forward to Milk & Sugar.
