◇ image via WikipediaThe Skatalites
The Skatalites is a Ska act. Their sound grew out of The Wailers, The Pioneers, Shame and Scandal, Leroy Wallace and Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals. Those roots explain a lot about how The Skatalites arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Don Drummond, Roland Alphonso, Tommy McCook, Derrick Morgan and Prince Buster, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Toots and the Maytals, The Supervillains, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Gwen Stefani, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 64 connections around The Skatalites, reaching back through The Wailers and forward to Toots and the Maytals.
