◇ image via WikipediaThe Smashing Pumpkins
The Smashing Pumpkins is a Rap act. Their sound grew out of Nirvana, Pink Floyd, L7, Surfer Rosa and Sumerian Records. Those roots explain a lot about how The Smashing Pumpkins arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Pixies, Local H, Alice in Chains, Everclear and Veruca Salt, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into 3 Doors Down, Evanescence, Lifehouse, Hawthorne Heights and The Abyss, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 127 connections around The Smashing Pumpkins, reaching back through Nirvana and forward to 3 Doors Down.
