Roky Erickson is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Black Angels and Clinic. Those roots explain a lot about how Roky Erickson arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Flamin' Groovies, Captain Beyond, Jefferson Airplane, Blue Öyster Cult and The Devil's Blood, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Red Krayola, Okkervil River, The Jesus and Mary Chain, R.E.M. and ZZ Top, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 51 connections around Roky Erickson, reaching back through The Beatles and forward to Red Krayola.
