Sarah McLachlan is a Alternative rock and Pop act. Their catalogue also touches Rock. Their sound grew out of U2, Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, Tom Waits and Joni Mitchell. Those roots explain a lot about how Sarah McLachlan arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Jewel, Sheryl Crow, 10,000 Maniacs, Indigo Girls and Dido, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Sandy, Alanis Morissette, Imani Coppola, Emmy Rossum and The Chicks, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 73 connections around Sarah McLachlan, reaching back through U2 and forward to Sandy.
